This is the twelfth exhibition with the title Creation of Childhood set up in Akureyri Art Museum. The aim is to promote museum education and to present and stimulate creative work by children from the age of five to sixteen. Each time participants are children and artists as well as Akureyri Museum / Toy Museum.
This year the sculptor Sólveig Baldursdóttir was invited to participate in the project. She studied at the Funen Art Academy in Denmark, graduating 1987. She moved to Carrara in Italy 1990 and created her work there at Studio Niccoli for the next four years. Baldursdóttir ran a studio in Akureyri 1995-2001 and worked on some outdoor artwork as well as exhibitions in Iceland and abroad.
Baldursdóttirʼs solo exhibition, Moments – Back in Time, opened at Akureyri Art Museum in November 2024 and has now been transformed into a new one: Creation of Childhood 2025. Her sculptures can be seen here in a new context – in an interesting dialogue with the childrenʼs work.
Participating schools this time are the playschool Hólmasól and the elementary schools Giljaskóli, Hlíðarskóli, Lundarskóli, Oddeyrarskóli and Síðuskóli. The children visited the Museum with their teacher and created works for the exhibition under Baldursdóttirʻs guidance. That gave them the opportunity to get to know the artist and create their own art, inspired by her sculptures.
