Katrín Jósepsdóttir (1914-1994) held various jobs during her lifetime but early on she started sewing and due to that she was most often called Kata the Seamstress. Her paintings are naive – which refers to a form of art usually defined as visual art that is created by a person who lacks the formal education and training that a professional artist undergoes. Naive artists are guided by emotions and sincerity in their creations – using unique methods and colors as well as a narrative that breaks the rules and norms but, at the same time, possesses a lot of beauty.
Kata the Seamstress had reached a mature age when she started experimenting with visual art. In this exhibition guests will have an opportunity to learn and create through viewing a portion of her works that are owned by Akureyri Art Museum. The works are sincere, and her passion should be an inspiration for children and adults alike – since we can all create. The outcome could be surprising.
The works exhibited are a portion of what Kata‘s family donated to the Akureyri Art Museum in 1994.
